How to Choose the Right Tie for the Shirt

Guys wear ties. For some of you, it is as if a noose were placed around your neck, just waiting to squeeze the life out of you. For others, ties are welcome accessories. Either way, guys wear ties.

So why not look good wearing a tie?

There are several aspects to wearing a tie, but today we are only going to go over a few of the basics of matching your tie to your shirt. While it is most important to match your tie to your shirt, you also don't want to choose the wrong pair of pants and end up looking like a hot mess. As far as your pants go, I recommend keeping your color palette simple and conservative. So without further ado, let's begin!

It's hard to find a tie that doesn't go with a white shirt. The only exceptions would be ties that are too light in color because then they can get lost in the white background.  If you make sure there is enough contrast between your tie and your shirt, you are good to go. I particularly like this tie from Croft & Barrow. The red really stands out and the grey really works well with charcoal pants.

When wearing a colored shirt, you should once again make sure there is enough contrast between your tie and your shirt.  To maintain a cohesive look, match one of the secondary colors of the tie to your shirt. To make things easier, you can often find shirts that come with ties. I picked up this Croft & Barrow shirt and tie set from Kohl's.

Every man should own a blue dress shirt. This yellow tie adds a nice, vibrant touch of color. The blue and white square pattern adds some texture and brings the shirt and tie together. Both the shirt and the tie are from JoS. A. Bank. While not necessary for your shirt and tie to be the same brand, it does make it easier to match them.

If you've ever worried about wearing patterned ties with patterned shirts, your days of worrying are over. First, keep following the same color guidelines we've been talking about. Second, make sure the pattern on your tie is different than the pattern on your shirt. It's as simple as that! Once again I've gone for the JoS. A. Bank shirt and tie combination.

Here is another example of a patterned tie with a patterned shirt. This time I've matched an Arrow brand tie with my JoS. A. Bank shirt. As long as the colors and patterns are compatible, the brand doesn't really matter.

I realized as I was preparing this post that I only have one solid tie. If you are pairing a solid tie with either a solid or a patterned shirt, you should generally choose a tie in roughly the same color family as the shirt. For example, if you are wearing a blue shirt, wear a navy tie. Staying in the same color family will help pull your outfit together into one cohesive whole.

Now grab your tie and keep lookin' good!
